Symposium on Phytoplankton Blooms in temperate coastal ecosystems
Role of phytoplankton blooms in the functioning of temperate coastal marine ecosystems : example of the English Channel and other European Atlantic coastal systems.
Organized by the Laboratoire d’Océanologie et de Géosciences (Wimereux)
This Symposium on Phytoplankton Blooms will be held on September 19-21, 2011 (starting on September 19 morning) and aims at gathering together scientists that are currently working on phytoplankton blooms in Atlantic coastal systems in Europe in order to dicuss about current research directions and prospectives in this field.
We will focus on the influence of phytoplankton blooms in structuring and influencing the functioning of coastal ecosystems as well as their role in determining the quality of marine waters. We will evaluate the signification and impact of each of the different blooms considered in terms of :
massive inputs of biomass and derived organic matter in the marine food webs,
potentially noxious accumulation of particulate and/or dissolved organic matter,
proliferation of toxic, potentially toxic and/or noxious species and impact on marine organisms,
development of toxic species leading to the contamination of exploited species and to sanitary (human health) problems.
The detailed programme is now available.
